The purpose what Jesus came into the world

Matthew 1:18-25

 

When every year December comes, we can see beautiful sight of christmas tree decorated. There are many christmas goods displayed in every store. We may feel christmas first come from store. In the world people give and take a gift of christmas and enjoy Christmas Eve. They celebrate each other saying "Merry christmas". By the way, many people just enjoy christmas without knowing origin of christmas. Someone know that the christmas is the birth day of Santa Claus. The origin of the word of christmas is a compound word with Christ and mass. It means that we need to rejoice at birth of Christ and worship God. We call this day to the Holy day, and remember and enjoy the birth of Jesus Christ who came into the world to save us, and worship. As this there is a reason to remember this day. That's why the birth of Jesus Christ gives great meaning to us all. Because we think that the birth day of Christ must become basis of history of the world, for the history of the world began at the day when Jesus Christ came into the world. So that people made the calender which nowadays we are using on the basics of the day when Jesus came into the world. This calender was made by Constantin who was an Emperor of Roman empire. Before Jesus Christ came into the world, there was no hope in the human's history, but after Jesus came into the world, the new light shined in the world, and the human can live in new hope. In other words, we can find and meet God through Jesus Christ.

 

1. Who is Jesus?

 

The birth of Jesus

 

When we read this text, we can find the word what introduced the birth of Jesus. "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:" This is concrete information about Jesus who came into the world as a descendant of Abraham and David. Jesus' mother Mary was pledged to be married with Joseph, son of David. To pledge to be married means that they must be married. This is more serious than now engagement, and they cannot break off engagement without adultery, it is real marriage. So that in the text, Joseph and Mary also were called husband and wife(verse 19). And they had a term of engagement around for one year. If husband die, wife become a widow automatically. At that time, if they did adultery, they must receive punishment of death(Deuteronomy 22:23, 24). Therefore this text explained that the birth of Jesus was strange in the sight of Jews who have not sexual relation for a term of engagement. In other words, before Mary is together with Joseph who engaged with her, she became pregnant Jesus by the Holy Spirit. At that time, it was interested thing that a virgin who engaged was pregnant before being together. That's why sexual combination is done when husband bring his wife to his house to be together with her after wedding. As this, when they are married in wedding and are together, their sexual combination is recognized lawfully. But Mary was revealed her pregnancy by the Holy Spirit. This does not mean that the pregnancy of Mary was revealed to shame or sin. Instead, this means that the pregnancy was done exactly by the special works of God. So that the true father of Jesus was not Joseph, but Jesus just was born through Mary by the Holy Spirit.

 

After Joseph knew the pregnancy of Mary, he tried to do his authority of husband. Joseph was righteous man. It means that he was integrity and did not yield unrighteousness. Indeed, he was justice and upright and lived according to the law of God. So, at least once, he might think about Moses' law that if woman was unfaithful, he must stone to her. His trouble was found from his heart what he wanted to break off engagement with Mary. Anyway, he could prove himself as true Jews through treating her severely, but he did not flourish sword of the law. Instead he tried to solve the problem through love and forgiving which is the kernel of the law. He had mind to divorce with her quietly. Joseph was righteous man and he did not want to expose her to public disgrace. But he did not want to be married with her whom he thought unfaithful. At that time Joseph tried to find the way to cut off relation with Mary in secrecy in the law allowed. In other words, he wanted to permit this problem giving her certificate of divorce before two witness, without what Mary receives damage. As this Joseph tried to harmonize righteousness and the law.

 

By the way, when Joseph was considering this, the angel of God appeared in his dream, and said to him, "Don't worry to take Mary home as your wife." Indeed even Joseph was in trouble and sadness, he might be in agony to find the best way to solve it. At that time, even his dream, he might not imagine the promise what God said to his forefather David that the Messiah comes was fulfilled between him and his wife Mary. In here, the angel of the Lord is expressed in the Old Testament. The Bible pointed messenger who received a mission to deliver God's will to the world.(Genesis 16:7-14;22:11-18; Exodus 3:2-4:17). Sometime this messenger was the appearing of God, and many times it was image of man. Now God revealed to Joseph his plan what he wanted to participate the history of the human through the messenger. Before the Bible was completed, sometime dream was used as the way that God deliver his will to men(Genesis 20:6; Judges 7:13; 1Samuel 28:6). As if Jacob received revelation of God through Joseph's dream(Genesis 37:5, 9, 19), Joseph son of Jacob also received direction of God through his dream.

 

Joseph son of David reminded us his role what he had to do as a descendant of David, indeed his role is very important in the birth of Jesus Christ. When God said to Joseph 'do not be afraid' through his messenger, Joseph could decide to take Mary. So it means that 'Never hesitate to take Mary'. In other words, the messenger said to Joseph that do not hesitate to take Mary his bridegroom, because he already engaged with her, and do not have mind that he will receive criticism because of it. That's why Mary's pregnancy was not unclean pregnancy by adultery, but it was holy pregnancy by the Holy Spirit. Of course Joseph did not understand this word concerning the Holy Spirit, but it made him who was just a believer of ordinary Jews to understand the secret of birth of Jesus. And he escape from human agony or conflict or fear. Jesus was born between his mother Mary and her husband Joseph in relation of law, and Joseph was father of Jesus in law, but real father was not Joseph.

 

Jesus who is the Son of God

 

And then whose son is Jesus? Luke 1:35 that was connected this text explained as this. "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God." Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit, but it means that the power of God overshadows Mary. In other words, the power of Holy God made Mary be pregnant borrowing her body by the Holy Spirit. Therefore Jesus will be called the Son of God. When God sent his Son as Savior into the world, he gave his human mother, but he did not give human father. As a result Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man, exactly perfect God and perfect Man.

 

Jesus is the Son of Holy God, that's why the Holy Spirit came down and the power of God covered Mary and she was pregnant. In other words, the power of God personally came into the body of Mary. When the power of God came into the body of Mary, the life who was in her body was God himself. God himself came into the body of Mary by the power of himself, and he became the life. God is Spirit. God who is Spirit came into the body of Mary, and gave the life by the Holy Spirit. He is exactly Jesus. Therefore Jesus is God, but he was born through body of Mary to come into the world with human body. This is the secret of birth of Jesus.

 

2. Jesus came into the world to save us.

 

Jesus came into the world to save his people.

 

The angel said to Joseph that Mary will give birth to son. And then Joseph might drive out fear perfectly, instead be deeply moved with the grace of God to make him attend into the best glory as a man. That's why he can live as husband of lovely Mary as before, and the Son who will be born from Mary will be exactly the Messiah.

 

Joseph heard that you are to give him the name Jesus. In all ages and countries, father has the power to give name of child(Genesis 4:25). In this order, God performed his power of baby's real Father. That's why God said to Joseph the name of baby, and he appointed Joseph who is lawful father of Jesus to the foster father of him. The meaning of word of Jesus is that God is salvation. This means that Jesus came into the world to save us. The name of Jesus is used with Christ. It is the confession of faith that Jesus is the Messiah who will come to redeem the human's sins.

 

The purpose what Jesus came into the world is revealed in the name of Jesus. The meaning of name called Jesus is that he saves his people from their sins. Jesus came into the world is to save his people from their sins. Therefore Jesus came into the world as a man who has no sin. Because if he has sin, he cannot save us. Therefore Jesus was not born through sexual relation with father and mother as like other people, but was born through body of virgin Mary by the power of God.

 

His people means that Jesus is king of Jews, but it just does not mean king of Jews, but the king of spiritual Israel, all christian. They are people of the Messiah, and recognize authority of Jesus and his rule. They are God's people who was selected before in the beginning. In here, sin means the human's will and deed which get out of God's will. Jesus came into the world to cover and heal our weakness. At that time Jews was waiting the Messiah who saves Israel from binding of Roman empire. But Jesus came into the world to save us from our sins.

 

Redemption of the cross of Jesus for the human.

 

God must judge the human who committed sin. But God who loves the human tried to find the way that he judge but save them. It is that one man who have no sin die instead the human. But there is no one who have no sin in the world. That's why all the human who is descendant of Adam was born in the sin because of Adam's sin. But God could not create other man instead Adam. That's why he cannot substitute Adam. Therefore the Savior who save us must be born as the descendant of Adam but he must have no sin. Therefore in Genesis 3:15, God promised that the descendant of woman will come. He is Jesus Christ. Jesus was born through body of virgin Mary for he came as the descendant of woman.

 

As this, Jesus came into the world to save us. God sent Jesus into the world to save us, for he made us his people and live with God. Jesus saved us from our sins through the cross. The cross is the place where God Judged the human. After Jesus judged and died on the cross instead us who were born in the sin because of Adam's sin, God forgave us and recognized that we have no more sin. The Holy God's justice judged all our sins through the cross of Jesus, and recognized that we have no sin. And God showed the righteousness of Jesus to make him rise on the third day from death, and he recognizes that those who believe in Jesus are righteous. We must confess ourselves that we are sinner and be judged and receive eternal punishment. But if we believe that Jesus died for our sins and revived, we may be forgiven and be saved and have eternal life. God sent Jesus to save and give us eternal life(John 3:16).

 

3. Jesus came into the world to live with us.

 

God is with us.

 

After Jesus came into the world, we can live with God. In Matthew 1:23, "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" -which means, "God with us." This text is the word that Isaiah the prophet prophesied(Isaiah 7:14), and it was fulfilled through birth of Jesus. The name of Jesus is Immanuel. Immanuel means that God is with us. It means that after Jesus came into the world, God is with us. In other words, Jesus is God who is with us. Immanuel is the name that Jesus who is the Son of God, the Messiah. Jesus came into the world to save us who were in despair because of our sins, and to be with us. Indeed, Jesus who died on the cross to save us who were enemy of God, and to reconcile us with God(1 John 4:10). He is the intermediary who the word became flesh and dwells among us(John 1:14). And he will be with us until last of the world(Matthew 28:20), and he himself is eternal God. Therefore those who are saved from their sin by Jesus Christ and recognize him can live with God everyday.

 

Then how does Jesus make us to live with God? When we believe in Jesus and confess him as our savior, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in our heart, and we can live with God. That's why the Holy Spirit is the third God. Therefore if the Holy Spirit is in our heart, God is with us, and he help us to live with God as God's people.

 

Brothers and sisters! This time, we heard the purpose that Jesus came into the world. Now we need to enjoy what the birth of Jesus who came into the world to save us as flesh of human being, and we need to try to live with Jesus. And we need to decide to live as the people of God. That's why Jesus came to live with us. If we want to live with Jesus, we need to confess Jesus as our savior.

 

What we confess Jesus as our savior is that we confess Jesus as our Lord and Our God. If we confess Jesus as our Lord, from now, we try to live not for our purpose, but for Jesus. If when we think about something or sleep or eat meal or work in workshop or meet to friends, we need to do for Jesus Christ. So whether though we eat or drink or whatever we do, we need to do it all for the glory of God. We always tried to do our lives by ourselves however we do. And then if it did not go well, we thought that's why God did not help us. If we really recognize Jesus as our God, we need to entrust in him and pray to God for our problem. We need to recognize that there is nothing what we can do by our power. We just pray to God. At that time God may answer us for all.

 

If we want to live with Jesus, we need to spend our times with Jesus. We can spend our times with Jesus through reading the Bible and praying. Whatever we do, we need to do pouring our heart to Jesus as like being before him. And whatever we say or think about or do something, we need to do thinking that if Jesus is, how may he do?
