Living of miracle

John 2:1-11

When we live in the world, we meet many things. There are Good things or bad things, joyfulness or grief, worry or relief, meeting or goodbyes, birth or death and getting money or losing money. Therefore we need to live to adapt ourselves to circumstances without care. When we suddenly meet problems in our lives, we will worry. But when it is settled we rejoice. The Bible teaches us such joy.

1. One who read problem

Problem which come in joyful place.

This story happened in Cana in Galilee. Galilee is 5 miles from Nazareth. There was a wedding. Wedding is a symbol of joy. Jesus and his disciples are invited to the wedding. At that time, there was an embarrassing sight because they needed wine in banquet, but they had no more wine. Wine is very important for people to congratulate on new married young people in banquet. But they had no more wine. It is a great problem. The master of the banquet who progress the banquet was embarrassed. Because the master of the banquet need to prepare wine for banquet, but there was no more wine. It is a difficult problem. The master of the banquet said to the master of the house that they had no more wine. The master of the house tried to get wine, so he commanded his servants to buy at market or to borrow from neighborhoods as soon as possible. But his every effort became vain. At the time he found one who was the mother of Jesus, Mary, invited people. He asked Mary for help on how to get wine because they had no more wine.

We had no more wine.

When Mary listened to the master of the house, she thought. "Now there is no one who can settle this problem, this problem will be just settled by God's Power." Mary could read the nature of the problem well. There was no wine in the banquet, but there was no way to get much wine which many people drink. If they could not get wine immediately, they need to ask for God's power. So she looked at Jesus. Because she thought that if Jesus hears this problem, he has wisdom to settle it. Mary came to Jesus and told him about the problem "They have no more wine"(verse 3). Mary told the problem to Jesus, because she expected that Jesus can settle it. It was a humble question that Jesus' mother asked to Jesus why they have no more wine, for she wants Jesus to make wine miraculously. Why did His mother ask for it? Even though before Jesus did not perform miracle, she believed in Jesus who has the personality to perform supernatural things. Because Jesus is the Son of God who was born with the Holy Spirit.

If we bring our problem to Jesus.

We also experience trouble that important things in our lives is gone, as like the master of the banquet. We experience trouble that we lose our health or money. At that time, we must not try to solve the problem by our own effort or must not despair, but we need to go near and ask to Jesus about our problem, as like Mary who came to him with faith. "Now there is only Jesus who help me. Help me!" And then even though we can not get the answer about our problem soon, but if we continue to pray, Jesus will solve our problem. Sometimes we want to rise miracle in our lives. But when we bring our problem to Jesus, miracle is possible.

My time has not yet come.

But after Jesus heard what Mary said, he refused it coolly. "Dear woman, why do you involve me? My time has not yet come."(verse 4) There was a reason why Jesus said 'dear woman' to his mother. Mary was Jesus' mother, she was exactly Jesus' mother on flesh. But in Jesus' public work, mother's authority can not interfere, but God's will is only valid. Jesus' mother also had just a woman's position, in the true authority. When Jesus called his mother 'dear woman', he recognized that his mother also need to obey God's word. Mary's relationship was no more meaning that Jesus works for the Kingdom of God. When Mary believed in and obeyed Jesus, he can show to her the power of God, because he was not her son but the Son of God Christ.

When Jesus said that my time has not yet come, my time means when he show the Messiah's glory(7:30, 8:20, 13:1, 17:1). This means the time when people believe and trust in Jesus as Messiah has not yet come. Jesus performed miracle which water had been turned into wine, for his disciples surely believed in Jesus as Messiah(verse 11). At that time, some disciples who were with Jesus believed and followed in Jesus as Messiah, but there was one who could not be sure in them. We don't know that master of the house believed in Jesus as Messiah, even though he ask Mary about the wine's problem will be solved. Jesus can not perform miracle where those who do not believe in him. At that time, Mary might ask to the master of the house to believe in Jesus.

Do whatever he tells you.

Mary realized what Jesus told her. Jesus worked for the Kingdom of God obeying God's will. Therefore those who attend the Kingdom of God need to obey the word of Jesus. Mary said to the servants that "Do whatever he tells you."(verse 5). Mary ask to the servants for they obey the word of Jesus. Obeying raise miracle of God. Mary was sure that if she ask to Jesus with faith, Jesus will answer her. She could not yet know how Jesus will solve it. Even though she didn't know how Jesus will solve it, she believed that if Jesus will solve it, the problem of wine will be solved. And then she asked to the servants that "Do whatever he tells you". Because even though she believed in Jesus, if the servants didn't believe in Jesus, it is difficult for the problem to be solved. She asked for the servants' faith. The servants had to do whatever Jesus tells them, as her word. There is no way without it. They just wanted that Jesus will do miracle for themselves.

2. When does Miracle rise?

Fill the jars with water.

Jesus heard that Mary said to the servants, and he said to them that "Fill the jars with water." Because Jesus saw that at least Mary trusted in him, the servants will also obey him according to her words. There were six stone water jars which the Jews used for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons(verse 6). Jews prepared stone water jars for ceremonial washing in house. As soon as Jesus said that "Fill the stone jars", the servants filled them to the brim(verse 7). It means that the servants trusted and believed in Jesus wholly. Because if they didn't believe in Jesus, they didn't fill the water jars to the brim. They filled the water jars to brim expecting how Jesus will do. But even though servants filled the water jars, they can see no change yet. It was water as before. But servants waited expecting how Jesus will tell them.

Water which was turned into wine.

At that time, Jesus said to the servants that "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."(verse 8). Now it is the time when the servants have faith. Even though there were still water in the jars, Jesus said to the servants that now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did so. They took it to the master of the banquet expecting Jesus will do miracle without complaint. There were no one who complain that "Now we do not need water but wine, why Jesus say so?"

At that time, miracle rose. As soon as the servants took water to the master of the banquet, he tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He thought that "Where did they get delicious wine?" He didn't realized where it had come from. Then he called the bridegroom aside, and said that "Everyone bring out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now." But the bridegroom also did not know where the wine came form. At that time, the servants thought that "Indeed it is water which Jesus said to us to take it to you, and it have been turned into wine." In this miracle, there was no explaining how water had been turned into wine, but the miracle appeared by the power of Jesus who works calmly. People do not know how Jesus do miracle, but those who obey Jesus can know. It is sure that water have been turned into wine by the power of Jesus. In here, good wine is figure that joy of salvation is completed by Jesus Christ. This was the first miracle that Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. Jesus revealed his glory through this miracle, and his disciples put their faith in him(verse 11). Here miracle means spiritual certificate that Jesus is the Messiah. 'He revealed his glory' means that he revealed his power as certificate of the Messiah.

3. Spiritual instruction which water have been turned into wine.

The miracle which water have been turned into wine gives us deep spiritual instruction. First, water taste nothing. Sometimes we can get the water which tastes sweet, but almost water tastes nothing. As like no taste water has been turned into good wine, before believing in Jesus we had no taste, after believing in Jesus we begin to live with faith. And we changed and begin to reveal taste to people around us. We can live as the children of God, and reveal Jesus' desire. We will be interested in other people and take care of their weaknesses, and say and do faithfully. We will love with Jesus' love and reveal Jesus' desire.

Second, water has no fragrance. When the servants took the water which had no fragrance to the master of the banquet, it had been turned into fragrant wine. Before believing in Jesus we shed no fragrance but bad smell, after believing in Jesus we reveal Jesus' fragrance. When we live with Jesus' heart, people see and know us as disciples of Jesus. So that wherever we go, we reveal Jesus' fragrance, and people say that "He is really one who believe in Jesus." Indeed, we want many miracles, but God already showed miracle. It is that we believed in Jesus and were saved, and we were changed in Jesus. When we look at our living, we realize what we were changed, as like water which have no taste have been turned into wine. We who had no taste begin to reveal little good taste, we who stank begin to shed fragrance.

Brothers and sisters! We hope so miracles rise in our lives, so that our problems are solved. And we hope we reveal to peoples taste of God's children and fragrance of Jesus Christ, as like good wine. We need to have faith as like Mary, for us to change the way of our lives. It is the faith that if we ask help to Jesus for our problem, he surely solve it. And we need to obey Jesus' words, as like the servants obeyed his words. When we obey God's words, miracles will rise, in result our lifestyle is changed that show in the way of our lives. If we ask to Jesus for even a little problem and obey his words, we will reveal taste of Jesus in our lives, we will shed fragrance.
